Situated between Rib Mountain State Park and the Wisconsin River, the Town of Rib Mountain, Wisconsin, is synonymous with outdoor fun for all ages. Many of the first people coming to the area that is now the Town of Rib Mountain were German. When the first settlers came, Rib Mountain was isolated from Wausau by the Wisconsin and Rib Rivers. Cow paths, wagon trails, and logging roads were the first roads in the township. Logging, mining, and farming were common activities early in the township's history.

Rib Mountain State Park, overlooking the town below, is the most spectacular and scenic park in the county. With an elevation of 1,941 feet, Rib Mountain juts out of the surrounding countryside to provide an awe-inspiring view. There are hiking trails and picnic facilities throughout the park, as well as overnight camping. Rib Mountain State Park is the 3rd highest point in Wisconsin. Marathon County even marks the exact center of the northern half of the Western Hemisphere, being exactly halfway between the North Pole and the Equator, and is a quarter of the way around the earth from Greenwich, England.

Long known for its wealth of recreational opportunities, the Town of Rib Mountain, Wisconsin, has evolved into a destination for shopping as well; Rib Mountain Drive, conveniently intersecting Interstate 39, is dotted with a growing count of popular retail developments snaking around fanciful lakes and ponds.
