What Makes Edgar Unique?
- Tree City USA Award - Edgar first applied for the Tree City USA designation in 1995 With the support and encouragement of our Forestry and Conservation representative from the Department of Natural Resources, we have maintained Edgar’s standing as a Tree City USA for 10 years.
Edgar must meet four standards to continue to be a Tree City USA.
1. There must be a forestry department. Paul Schilling is the Village Forester. 2. Edgar must have a local tree ordinance. Village Code of Ordinance, Sec. 6-4 fills this requirement. 3. The Village must spend a minimum of $2.00 per capita on forestry programs. In 2005, the Village’s population was 1449. That means that we were expected to spend at least $2898.00. With tree replacements and removals, curbside chipping, annual pruning, and other activities, we generally exceed the required expenditure. 4. The Village must promote Arbor Day. In cooperation with Edgar Elementary School, an annual Arbor Day/Earth Day program has been incorporated into their curriculum which also includes: Reduce, Reuse, & Recycle as methods of being good stewards of the earth.
- Oak Street Park - Located on N. Third Avenue between Oak Street and Lutz Street. Approximately 8 acres large. Facilities available include both a large shelter and a small shelter, restroom facilities, picnic tables, grills, horse shoe pits, grass volleyball court and playground equipment. This park is also home to the "Pioneer Log Cabin," a local historical building once occupied by early settlers to the area.
- Minnow Ponds Park - Located on Chesak Avenue at the northwest corner of the Village.
This 10.3 acre park was built on land donated to the Village in May of 1984. The park contains four spring-fed ponds which were initially developed for raising minnows. The park facilities include a shelter, restrooms and changing area, grills, picnic tables, children's playground equipment, grass volleyball court, and walking/jogging trails. A 1.75 acre pond with a sand beach has also been developed for swimming.
- Shortner Athletic Park - Located on the south bank of Scotch Creek, just east of Third Avenue. This park has been improved over the years with funds designated by the Shortner Family for this type of facility. Frank, Lucy, and Anna Shortner, along with their parents were residents Edgar, shortly after Edgar was incorporated in 1898. The three siblings remained single and childless. Frank served as Village President for two terms in the late 1920s and early 1930s. When the last of the siblings, Lucy Shortner, passed away, she chose to leave their estate to be used for projects that would benefit the youth of the area. The park was named in their honor.
