Athens is a village in Marathon County, Wisconsin, United States. It is part of the Wausau, Wisconsin Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Village of Athens is located in an agricultural area of North Central Wisconsin approximately 25 miles northwest of the City of Wausau. The population is 1,095est., and has a total area of 2.4 square miles (6.3 km²), all of it land.
What Makes Athens Unique?
- Athens Park - is located at the southern village limits on State Highway “97” and encompasses 25 acres. This facility provides a secluded scenic picnic grounds with an enclosed shelter, playground equipment, and upgraded hiking trails and walk across bridges.
- Memorial Park- This .3 acre park is located at Caroline and Mueller Streets. This facility has a shelter with blacktop floor, men’s and women’s restrooms, camping hookups, two grills, picnic tables, modern playground equipment, drinking bubbler, park benches, a memorial site which includes an army tank and flags, as well as a skating rink.
- Village Forest - This 338 acre area is located west of Erbach Park and provides residents and community with year-round activities. There are currently 7 miles of developed trails in various stages of development. This undeveloped wooded area is ideal for the trails because of its natural beauty, wildlife and creek flowing through it. All of these will be preserved.
- Village Square - This .2 acre area is located in the center of the village between Degner and Kreutzer Streets. This facility includes a bandstand, picnic tables, and a drinking fountain. Situated in the center of the business area, this park is the scene of weekend summer concerts, and the Athens Fair held annually in August.
- Black Creek Falls - was founded by Fred Rietbrock in 1879, who operated a sawmill and provided the economic base throughout the early years. This village square, with a bandstand which provided concerts for the early settlers and mill workers, is still the main focus of the village today. The village was named Athens in 1890 by Mr. Strupp, based on his love of classic Greek and similar topography of Athens, Greece. The Village of Athens was incorporated in 1901, from parts of the townships of Bern, Halsey, Rietbrock, and Johnson.
